Optional Summoner Spells

Exhaust summoner spell

Exhaust

Solid choice in most of the games. Helps against assassins, divers and melee overall. It also lowers your healing output as you do not take Heal. Solid choice overall.

Ignite summoner spell

Ignite

Offensive option, improves your damage, gives you additional cooldown to use in fights, but reduces your healing output.

Ghost summoner spell

Ghost

Improves mobility. You can chase, position and flee better. Reduces your healing output, but makes you more agile in fights.

How it works

General

  1. You're a healer, Harry.
  2. Even though Aatrox is not typical support, you are gonna support your team very effectively. With heals, shields and buffs:
    • Heal summoner spell.
    • Guardian and Font of Life runes.
    • Redemption, Locket of the Iron Solari and Moonstone Renewer and other items.

Playstyle

  1. Play safe, stay in the back and play like support, so you can stay and heal more. 🛡️
  2. Sometimes, you can go in and play more aggressively when the opportunity is right. ⚔️
  3. Focus on healing and shielding to keep allies alive. 💖
  4. Use Redemption, Locket, and Heal on cooldown for healing. ✨

How to play

Support Aatrox

  1. Even as a Support, you can initiate great fights with your The Darkin Blade (Q) or sometimes even with Infernal Chains (W). Look for opportunities.
  2. You can be a fantastic peeler.
    • Enemies going after your carry? Stay close to your buddy and knock intruders up with your The Darkin Blade (Q).
    • Slow and pull from Infernal Chains (W) can also help.

General

  1. This is an off-meta and very fun build that works on ANY champion - even those without healing or shielding abilities!
  2. Your job is to stay alive and provide constant healing, shielding, and buffs to your team through items and summoner spells.
  3. Play safe and stay in the back. The longer you survive, the more you can heal your teammates.

Items

  1. Your first rush is Redemption.
  2. Your second rush can be Locket of the Iron Solari (vs AoE burst) or Moonstone Renewer (for sustained healing).
  3. Rush Locket #2 if your team is already doing teamfights or when enemy team has champions with super AoE damage. Otherwise, get Moonstone Renewer #2.
  4. The third item should be whatever you did not buy - Locket of the Iron Solari or Moonstone Renewer. That's your core
  5. Echoes of Helia is a strong option - you can proc it consistently with Font of Life (from your slow/CC abilities). However it encourages you to play aggressive to stack it and with this build, you really want to stay behind and play passive. Be careful.
  6. Knight's Vow is surprisingly strong if you have a carry/strong bruiser/strong tank. Stick with them and support them specifically.

Summoner Spell

  1. Try to use summoner spell Heal on cooldown, especially when 2+ allies are nearby. With Moonstone Renewer, you want to heal multiple people for maximum value.

Late game

  1. Later in the game (6 items), you can sell boots for a sixth support item to maximize your healing output.

Buffing your team

  1. Ardent Censer is worth it if you have auto attackers on your team (ADCs, auto-attack bruisers). It will trigger often enough to be good buy.
  2. Bandlepipes is a good new item that gives MS and buffs your allies Attack Speed when you slow/immobilize enemies. Good for your auto attackers.
  3. Staff of Flowing Water is great if you have AP champions on your team. You'll be proccing it frequently with your support abilities.
  4. Cryptbloom is interesting if you want to go full healing. Get it as #4+ item.

Runes

  1. Guardian is your most important rune. It provides massive shielding, but remember: you need to be close to your allies to proc it.
    • You can also manipulate it - for example, you can stick to one ally, or avoid some spells that's gonna only waste it.
  2. Another important rule is Cosmic Insight. It is crucial because it reduces cooldowns for your active items and Heal summoner spell:
    • Redemption and Locket of the Iron Solari - 81.92 sec cooldown (down from 90 sec).
    • Shurelya's Battlesong - 68.12 sec cooldown (down from 75 sec).
    • Heal summoner spell gets reduced cooldown too!
  3. You will be triggering Font of Life effect, which will heal your allies. It also chains off Moonstone Renewer!
  4. Important Font of Life total healing is NOT properly calculated in post-game stats. The actual value in-game is much higher than displayed! You heal more than you think!

Redemption

  1. Try to use Redemption on cooldown when your allies are missing health. It's best used when they are grouped together.
  2. If you already have Moonstone Renewer, wait (or ping) until allies group before using Redemption, so you can heal everyone at once.
  3. You CAN use Redemption for damage, but generally it's not worth it. Keep it to heal your team!
  4. Be careful when using Redemption while dead and about to respawn. The camera will snap to your position, and you might accidentally cast it in the spawn pool. Watch out for bad timing!

Tips and Tricks

Champion

The Darkin Blade (Q)

  1. Q + Flash combo: You can use Flash during any time of The Darkin Blade (Q) animations. You can even combine that with Umbral Dash (E). You can Flash and E in any direction, making very spectacular and flashy plays.
  2. To elevate your Aatrox's game, when you want to Q + Flash combo or Q + E combo, make sure to do it at the very last frame of the animation, so enemies won't have any time to react.
  3. Flash or E at the very end of Q animation, to elevate your combo. This way your enemies won't have a chance to react.

Umbral Dash (E)

  1. You can use Umbral Dash (E) for short dash, this way animation lasts shorter, and you can get crucial milliseconds to auto attack faster (can be deciding a factor in 1v1).
  2. You can reset your auto attack timer with Umbral Dash (E). It might be crucial in duels, or when pushing enemy turrets.

World Ender (R)

  1. Most people think of Aatrox’s World Ender (R) as just a tool to go all-in, but it actually has a lot of value even if you don’t fully commit. Just pressing R can scare enemies off — they’ll often back away, delay a fight, or play safe until it wears off. You can use that window to pressure them, take space, or secure an objective without even fighting.

Riot

  1. Use Umbral Dash while casting The Darkin Blade to increase your chances of hitting the enemy.
  2. Crowd Control abilities like Infernal Chains or your allies' immobilizing effects will help you set up The Darkin Blade.
  3. Cast World Ender when you are sure you can force a fight.
