Optional Summoner Spells

Exhaust summoner spell

Exhaust

Defensive option. Exhaust for peeling against enemy divers and assassins and protecting your carries.

Ghost summoner spell

Ghost

Ghost for extra mobility - great for chasing down fleeing enemies or staying on top of slippery AD carries.

Ignite summoner spell

Ignite

Offensive option if you are feeling spicy. Grievous Wounds + some damage. Good in early fights and you can score some kills, but reduces your going-in potential. Especially later.

How it works

General

  1. You rush Thornmail and stack as much Armor as you can.
  2. You become auto-attackers' worst nightmare.
  3. Hit or miss. Works great if the enemy team is full of physical damage and auto-attackers. Less effective against full AP - but still viable since players auto attack anyway.

Playstyle

  1. Rush Thornmail and become a walking cactus. 🌵
  2. Stay in fights - the more they hit you, the more they hurt themselves. ⚔️
  3. Adapt: if they are heavy AP, pivot to regular tank items. 🎯

How to play

Thornmail Taric

  1. Bastion (W) grants you bonus Armor. More Armor = more sweet Thornmail damage.
  2. Thanks to Starlight's Touch (Q), Bastion (W) and even Cosmic Radiance (R) you are getting survability in fights, meaning more hits and even more sweet Thornmail damage!

General

Getting started

  1. Start with Bramble Vest and Ruby Crystal. Rush Thornmail #1, then keep stacking Armor items.
  2. This build is aimed to counter AD comps. Since you don't know the enemy team before loading in, you need to adapt. If they are heavy AP, you can just fall back to a regular tank build.

During fights

  1. Stay in the middle of fights as long as possible. The more enemies hit you, the more damage Thornmail reflects.
  2. Randuin's Omen is great for engagements - it slows enemies on activation and reduces their crit damage.
  3. Late game, you can consider selling boots for a 6th item - for even more sweet Thornmail damage!
  4. You can use Bandlepipes to give your whole team an attack speed boost whenever you CC enemies. Great synergy with auto attackers.

Runes

  1. Be careful to not waste Aftershock. Try timing it and keeping it for going in. It increases your Armor greatly, which in turn increases Thornmail damage!
  2. You can also take Grasp of the Undying as an alternative rune if you prefer scaling.
  3. Triumph is better overall (heal + gold), but if you want to have easier time with your mana, go Presence of the Mind.

Items

  1. Hitting your Dazzle (E) stun will proc Fimbulwinter.

Tips and Tricks

Champion

Bravado (Passive)

  1. Always keep auto attacking, whenever possible. Your Bravado (Passive) provides good damage and reduces cooldowns of your basic abilities!
  2. Also weave abilities for even more cooldown reduction. I.e. two auto attacks - spell - two auto attacks - spell. This way you can reduce Dazzle (E) cooldown very fast.

Dazzle (E)

  1. To elevate your Taric's game, when you want to Dazzle (E) + Flash combo make sure to do it at the very last frame of the animation, so enemies won't have any time to react.

Cosmic Radiance (R)

  1. Do not wait for 'special' moment with your Cosmic Radiance (R)! You feel that fight is about to happen, use it early.
  2. You can use your Cosmic Radiance (R) to team fight (combined with Dazzle (E) and just going in) or to scare off enemies or to dive under turret.

Engaging

  1. You have good engaging tools - Dazzle (E) and Cosmic Radiance (R). Use it!

Taric Combos

  1. E + Flash Combo: You can use Dazzle (E) then Flash.

Riot

  1. The cooldown reducing component of Bravado makes Cooldown Reduction items like Frozen Heart, Iceborn Gauntlet, and Spirit Visage exceptionally powerful on Taric.
  2. Using Starlight's Touch at lower charges makes its healing less Mana efficient, but can greatly increase Taric's sustained damage via Bravado.
  3. Rather than saving Cosmic Radiance for the last moment and risking someone dying during the delay, it can be more beneficial to cast it as soon as you know a teamfight is guaranteed to start.
